Are you setup for poverty or riches?
Sunday, September 30th, 2007Which word in “Think And Grow Rich” is emotionally loaded?
If you guessed the word ‘rich’ you’d be right.
The answer to the below question might surprise you.
What’s the original meaning of the word ‘rich’?
a. Smart and ambitious
b. penny pinching and miserly
c. mighty and noble
d. arrogant and bossy
I’ll give you the answer in a moment but first lets find out if you’re mentally set up for poverty or riches.
Do you want financial freedom?
Most of my readers would answer a resounding ‘Yes!’ but the truth is that your unconscious might say ‘No’.
Consider this statement by Joseph LeDoux, author of the Emotional Brain “Freud was right on the mark when he described consciousness as the tip of the mental iceberg”
That means that most of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors are made unconsciously.
So even if you consciously said you want financial freedom you can be outvoted by your unconscious. And that’s when self-sabotage takes place.
Here’s a 3-minute exercise that can uncover how your unconscious feels about being rich.
Grab a blank sheet of paper or open notepad. For the next 3 minutes, complete the following sentence as many times as you can. Give a different answer each time.
TIP: The trick to making this work is to write as fast as you can and never let your pen (or keyboard if your using it) stop writing.
Rich people are…
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
Rich people are
When you’re done, see if you entered any negative responses.
Oh, as promised here’s the answer to the question at the top of this post.
The word ‘Rich’ goes back to the Indo-European base ‘reg’ ( means to move in a straight line ). But the original meaning of the word rich was “mighty and noble”
Were you surprised by your answers to any of today’s exercises? Are you setup for riches or poverty? What do you think?
